# Installing and Upgrading the Appliance

ExaVault is delivered as a virtual appliance that runs in your cloud account or virtual-machine environment. A successful deployment requires supported compute and storage, a stable IP address and hostname, and network access for the protocols and administrative interfaces you plan to use.

Before deployment, review the [System Requirements](/installing-and-upgrading-the-appliance/system-requirements.md) and [Firewall Configuration](/installing-and-upgrading-the-appliance/firewall-configuration.md). Then obtain the appropriate image and follow the [Installation and Setup](/installing-and-upgrading-the-appliance/installation-and-setup.md) instructions for your environment. The installation process configures the appliance, attaches its data storage, and establishes access to the Appliance Manager.

After the appliance is running, [Automatic Updates](/installing-and-upgrading-the-appliance/automatic-updates.md) explains the available update methods and the service interruption an update causes. Premium installations can apply updates automatically or on demand; other installations update by deploying a new image and reconnecting the existing data disk.
